the ecuadorian "guayas" was built in 1977 in bilbao, spain. it is 268 feet long and her sail area is over over 17000 square feet at maximum.

one of the most interesting things about the "guayas" was her gigantic flag, bigger then the sails of most schooners.

we did not board the "guayas" because it was so crowded with tourists, and proceeded to the "barque eagle" which was docked further down the pier.

this ship has an interesting history as it was originally built as one of 5 german naval vessels in the 1930s. the u.s. coast guard received the ship as part of u.s. reperations after world war 2.

3rd seaman griffith (damn i don't think that was his name, but it was something close) was very proud of the barque eagle and answered many of my questions about this ship, the crew, and the parade of tall ships. when i commented on the imaculate deck, joking about deck duty, i quickly found out it was no laughing matter. the sailor informed me that he was part of a 21 man and woman crew which took 4 days to clean the deck using acid and cinder blocks. he was also quick to note that having been on board the "guayas" earlier he was quite proud of the fact that the "eagle's" deck was in much better shape than the ecuadorian ship's.
