the coast guard "barque eagle" was built in the '30s in germany and was a world war 2 war prize. it was a big win for the coast guard to receive the ship originally slated for the navy

the eagle is now used to train coast guard cadets and to colorfully represent the u.s. coast guard in both the pacific and atlantic. this ship, btw, sailed from connecticut, through the panama canal, and up to portland to pick up cadets before making her way to the bay area.

this ship, the dewaruci sailed in from indonesia. it is a 191 foot barquentine stationed in jakarta as a training vessel for the indonesian navy.

although dwarfed by the 7 giant tall ships, the smaller vessels were also impressive, like this one, which i believe is the topsail ketch argus, originally a baltic sea vessel.

another ship that joined the parade was the schooner "hawaiian chieftain" which is a local vessel stationed in sausalito. this ship is apparently available for charter rentals in the bay.

here, the incredible 4 mast kaiwo maru, a 361 foot japanese training vessel and the largest ship in the parade, crossed under the golden gate bridge, dwarfing sailboats and schooners alike.

this complex array of sails belongs to the colombian vessel, gloria, hailing from cartagena, and the ecuadorian guayas. these 260+ foot ships have a maximum sail area of over 15000 square feet!

the tall ships entered the bay under wind power, sailed under the golden gate, between alcatraz and fisherman's warf, past the bay bridge, then turning around, and returning to the warf under motor power; always accompanied by hundreds of vessels ranging from sailboats, to schooners, to the smaller tall ships, and even the impressive fire tug that sprayed water tens of feet into the air.

the ecuadorian "guayas" and the "concordia" made their way through the bay a little later on. the latter ship is a charter ship from nassau, bahamas.

the 600mm telephoto allowed for interesting views of the crew on the various ships especially the dewaruci who's crew seemed to prefer hanging out in the mast and beams.

the final photo is of the japanese kaiwo maru, or "king of the sea" which was the youngest of the ships having been built just 5 years ago. continue with the return to dock and july 5th photos from golden gate and fisherman's warf.
