| the
jeremiah o'brian was a cargo vessel, one of hundreds, used during wwii.
it's not as glamorous or famous as its fighting siblings such as the hornet,
but it filled an important role. this particular ship is a working museum,
the o'brian still sails, and it's the only ship museum that i know of
which will let you wonder around the ship, including in the engine room,
while in transit. in these days of lawsuits from splinters that's very
unusual. and welcome. we were sad to hear that this year, 1999, the o'brian would be making her last voyages, as the foundation in charge of running the ship simply can't afford the insurance and maintainance of the vessel. i believe it will become part of the naval museum in alameda. |
