MUNI DEPOT
(with Bijan Marashi)

November 1998

as with "speed queen" this was bijan's idea.  he saw a bus with some wild techno looking ad on it and wanted to take pictures of the bus with the markings.

we never found that particular bus but got some good stuff anyway.

once again our undercover story was "school project" but despite his masterful grasp on human relations, bij was unable to convince the workers at the depot to let us wonder around.

"go to the main office downtown sf and get a permit" we were told.

so of course we went in anyway, mostly staying around the edges and using the telephotos.

bijan had the pentax, and i used the canon.

the catenary is extremely interesting but it was next to impossible to get a good shot that captured it's complexity.  we both tried, wasting much film.  the four shown were taken by bijan.  he also snapped the excellent picture of the bus driver in 7015 leaning into the turn and then the back of it is went past.

eventually some worker came over to yell at us.

"you can't just take pictures here without a permit".

"look, we're not even inside the perimeter".

"i'm sorry but those are the rules".

i guess we looked too old to be students and just old enough to be journalists (i think we are too young to be mistaken for a team of insurance claims investigators) possibly researching some nasty story about pollution, mismanagement, or maybe we were spies, eager to steal the secrets of the portrero area muni bus depot and selling them to to the enemy.

anyway, it didn't stop us from getting some interesting material.

when we were done it turned out bijan had accidentally switched the pentax into b-mode and overexposed half the film.  so we should probably get back there again in the future and see what he comes up with.

it was an early morning for me and i had been up all night looking for the remnants of the leonids so I went home and slept all day.  morning light really does make a difference.  too bad i rarely see it.
