the gentleman who let us take pictures of his busy laundromat that saturday lives in the back room.  unbelievably squalid.  smaller than most closets. there is a little lamp there and an ashtray.  maybe it helped that bijan spent 30 minutes polishing the machines;  they don't normally look this clean but the caretaker got really taken with the idea of taking pictures of his washers and dryers.  he helped out.  he opened secret panels and made suggestions and ignored the complaints of some of the customers one of whom made a big show of telling her son how she'd never let him go to berkeley (we told folks we were doing a school project as we didn't want to explain the whys).  i wanted to photograph the old man but never got around to it, and now i even forget his name.
