San Francisco Zoo
March 1998

i've never been awfully crazy about zoos, but i wanted to shoot some photos of animals so b and i went over to the san francisco zoo one sunny day in march.

the sf zoo sucks.  don't take your kids there.  they will either cry at the sad animals or learn that it's okay to make animals live this way.

Look at this photo of the hippo on the left.  it portrays a lot of what i felt from the apathetic, lethargic animals here. no, the hippo isn't dead, but it is sick, and doesn't even have the motivation to move into the shade.  the hippo on the right was submerged in a tiny pool, just barely big enough for one beast.

the young elephant on the left was playful but in a bored way.  two older elephants posed in the photo on the right.

this gorilla was not at all interested in joining his mates in the sleeping quarters nor was it interested in the screaming kids who tried to get his attention.  the baby rhino on the right was alone in a small runaround.  she kept trying to get the elephants to play with it.

the lemurs were the only mammals that seemed genuinely happy, they were playing and jumping around much like young cats.

this bald eagle looked free on its little island, but obviously its wings were clipped. some of the other birds like the swan above and the flamingos below actually seemed to be content.  then again birds are pretty fucking stupid.

marabou storks are the vultures of the stork world.  ah, the legacy of dinosaurs.

even the penguins which are usually a frolicking staple in zoos seemed lame here.  their space is extremely limited as is the ostrich range which it shared with the marabou storks and zebras.

the parrot was part of the zoo's aviary which had less birds and variety than sammy's pet world.  The peacock was either flirting with b or getting ready to attack me.  i was once attacked by a turkey when i was a kid.  it knocked out two of my teeth so i'm still weary of anything that looks like a turkey regardless of it's pretty tail.
